Early Christmas break Print E-mail
Written by Herbert
Saturday, 26 December 2009
Unfortunately my Christmas break came a bit earlier this year for me. Since the beginning of the season I've been struggling with severe pains in my lower back and my shins. At first I thaught I just had to get used to being on snow again or racing, but the more I raced the worse the problems got. Especially my shins turned out to be quite the problem; These are used in XC-skiing to stabilise your body as balance on the ski's. A good leg push seemed impossible to make.
In Pokljuka, Slovenia, I did try to compete in the individual race, but it was pretty useless. After a long discussion with the physio we decided to take a rest right away. The danger is that if the shins get irritated again and again, it will become a chronic problem, and than th season is over right away. Now it should take only a week to just get the inflamation to go away.

So for sure this is the smartest option; Normally every biathlete takes a couple of days rest once he or she gets back from the first period of racing. In the past days I've already done my skating kilometres and I felt fine. Now it's important to make sure that doing a short rest enables me to be on top of my game once the racing starts again, and not have lost too much of valuable training.

So in the upcoming week there will be some good training before I leave for the IBU Cup in Altenberg, Germany. Here I can do the 2 IBU Cup races as well as an internal qualification race of the USA team. So that's 3 races to get me started and prepared for the Ruhpolding and Antholz World Cups.
