BIOGRAPHY - In 1985 Herbert was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. After threeyears –in 1988- his dad got him on cross-country ski’s, after seeingmembers of nordic club R.W. Rottemeren rollerskiing. Herbert got really into it throughout his youth. At the age of 7, in 1992, Herbert won his first national title in rollerski and cross-country skiing. Many titles would follow… In 1995, at the age of 10, Herbert competed in his first international cross-country, besides local German races that turned out successful. He participated in the Trofeo Topolino in Val di Fiemme, Italy. He landed at 5th place out of a 120 10-year olds. Into high school age, around 1997, cross-country skiing and rollerskiing became more and more important. Herbert did his first rollerski World Cups, which were a great experience for him. From 1998 Herbert participated in more and more rollerski World Cups, won some German cross-country races and kept winning Dutch titles in rollerski and cross-country skiing. 2001 meant a change in Herbert’s life; The choice had to be made between rollerski and biathlon. Because Herbert loves cross-country skiing, he chose biathlon and found one of the most challenging of sports there is. With that choice everything became more professional. High altitude training, more snow training and more races on a higher level followed. In 2002 Herbert won his first World Cup rollerski in the youth category up the Col du Galibier in France and he started racing in European Cups biathlon. 2003 would appear to be a very successful year, with Herbert finishing 9th at the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival, winning the overall World Cup rollerski for the youth category and winning his first Dutch title in cross-country skiing in the senior category. After this year, Herbert decided to focus only on biathlon, figuring that in biathlon the level is simply higher than rollerski and scoring well in biathlon is therefore far more prestigious. In 2004 he qualified for the World Cup biathlon by making the cut in the European Cup in Obertilliach, Austria according to IBU rules. In January of that year he was the youngest Dutch biathlete ever to participate in a World Cup biathlon, finding it a great source of experience. In February 2005 Herbert participated in his second World Cup on the Olympic track of San Secario near Torino, Italy. In March of that year he participated in his third Junior World Championships in Finnish Kontiolahti.

After that winter Herbert decided that is was necessary for him to change residence in order for him to get better at biathlon. His choice was America, and he moved to Grand Rapids, Minnesota to train with US juniors trained by Vladimir Cervenka. This proved to be the right choice: With good results throughout the season, marked by a 23rd place in the Junior World Champs Herbert saw the potential there is. This made him decide to go all the way: In the spring of 2006 he moved to German Ruhpolding to train with the best trainers and under the best circumstances possible.
